Our beloved 3dfx graphics cards are getting on in years. It is becoming increasingly difficult to source spare parts. This makes it all the more important to preserve them while spare parts are still available. This makes it all the more important to maintain the 3dfx cards, prevent failures and keep them in good working condition. One particularly important part of maintenance is the power supply rework and recap. The replacement of critical parts and all electrolytic capacitors. This is an extremely important measure, especially for Voodoo 4 and Voodoo 5 cards, to prevent the GPUs from dying in the event of a switch converter defect.
Firstly, the GPUs (VSA100) have become very rare and expensive. Secondly, it involves a lot of work and high costs, which are unnecessary with proper maintenance.

In einem gemeinsamen Projekt und der nötigen Eigendynamik haben wir, mehrere Member aus dem Voodooalert Forum, eine nachbausichere Möglichkeit ersonnen um die 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 PCI mit einem DVI Ausgang zu versehen.

Bei einer passiven Kühlung rate ich dringendst die TMU’s und FBI’s mit Kühlkörpern zu versehen. Es ist keine Panikmache oder Klugscheißerei. Als die Karten neu waren war das alles nicht wichtig. Aber jetzt, wo sie so alt sind, ist das umso wichtiger – wichtiger aus den genannten Gründen.

Es gibt in dieser Technik keine Referenz.
Das perfekte Wavetable, an dem sich alle anderen messen lassen müssten ist mir nicht bekannt. Vielmehr ist es so, das jedes Modul, jedes Onboard Wavetable, jeder Soundbuddy Besonderheiten hat, welche in der Musik Art zum Ausdruck kommen. Beispielsweise Jazz – Bigband – Rock – Klassik – Elektro und Industrial. Das ist es, was wir im Spielebereich zumeist als Begleitmusik vorfinden.
